Injustice: Gods Among Us is the coolest thing since Mr. Freeze, but without all of the terrible, terrible puns (thanks, “Batman Forever”). After rocking the XBOX 360, it’s made its way onto the iPad, iPod, and iPhone, where it stills boasts crisp graphics and amazing battle animations (it’s also freeee). On top of that, it has about a bazillion characters to choose from, upgrade, unlock, buff, and customize, including Supes, the Flash, Nightwing, Solomon Grundy, Doomsday, and Cyborg to name just a few. The fights are fun, frantic, and fast-paced, but once you start rising in the ranks, you’ll need a couple tips to deal with the tougher fights.
1. Grind, Grind, Grind
A big part of Injustice: Gods Among Us (at least the app) is grinding for coins and experience. Every time you fight, you gain experience for the three team members, which raises their levels, and you gain a certain number of coins, which you can use to unlock new abilities, items, and buffs. While the combat is pretty easy to master, you’re not going to get past tougher enemies unless your characters are buffed up with special unlocks and ridiculous levels of experience–you just don’t have enough HP or damage to go toe-to-toe otherwise. It can get frustrating to get beaten down by Lex Luthor for the hundredth time, so keep this in mind.
2. Holy Combo Platter, Batman!
The app version of Injustice: Gods Among Us doesn’t have the vast range of combo patterns that you find in console game, but mastering the timing of your swipes and taps opens a whole new world of frantic button-mashing (or screen-mashing): timing your heavy and light attacks perfectly can create the same devastating combos as any Street Fighter game, and the inclusion of “swipe windows” that ask you to swipe a finger at certain times means you always have to be watching for openings and knockdown opportunities. Once you have the rhythm down, you can seamless chain in your special attacks without opening yourself up for retaliation. When you start fighting upper-echelon enemies, you’ll need that timing nailed down pat, or get wasted by their combos.
3. A Few Good Men (and Amazons)
The fatal, systemic error that many Injustice: Gods Among Us players make is sinking all of their experience, coins, and items in their Bronze-level characters (the starting ones), trying to get them up to snuff to fight through the whole game. DO NOT DO THIS. Some characters, like Nightwing, just don’t have the HP and damage combination to hold their own later on in the game, and when you’ve only got three characters in your team, you need them all to be versatile or maxed out so hard that they can punch through anything as a combined force. A mixture of heavy and light characters is generally a good strategy, but play through as many characters as you can to find the ones who have the right combo rhythm, speed, and special attacks for your playstyle.
Injustice: Gods Among Us buries you under a pile of characters, upgrades, and unlocks to choose from, and that’s what makes it fun: building a tailor-made beatdown squad that cuts through supervillains (and superpowered Boy Scouts) like a lawn-mower. For fans of Marvel, DC, and all the esoteric Rogue’s Galleries that casuals don’t know about, Injustice: Gods Among Us is the best choice around. Stay frosty out t
