The NRA Practice Range app has just hit the market, and is causing quite the scandal. Due to the recent Newtown shootings in Connecticut, the app has been criticized heavily by the media if appropriate or not. Originally marketed for ages 4 and up, the NRA changed the age rating to 12+.
Those against the app say it is “highly inappropriate” and “promoting violence”. It is based around three different shooting ranges; an indoor range, an outdoor range, and a skeet shooting range. By showing military weapons being used for personal, recreational use, it could potentially send the wrong message to children, telling them it’s okay to use these kinds of weapons in everyday use.
Those in agreement with the NRA find nothing wrong with the app. It gives facts about the NRA, along with tips and useful information about gun ownership and gun safety. Most who are for the app feel it to be a way for the NRA to promote gun safety in a way that will reach children– the more often they play the game, the more often they will see these gun tips, and they will remember them for the future.
Regardless of which side you are on concerning the NRA Practice Range app, from gameplay stance, it seems harmless enough. The targets are squares and frisbees, and you are timed in 1 minute increments to shoot as many targets as possible. There are three levels of difficulty: Shakey (easy), Hot Shot (medium), and Dead Eye (hard). You are given an M9 to play, and other guns may be unlocked with an in-app purchase of $0.99.
Gun enthusiasts, beware: shooting wise, this game is not very accurate. It is not meant to hone your skills. It is a simple, easy to learn, practice shooting game that doesn’t have a lot of depth. That being said, for those who may not know how to use a gun, or just like trying to aim and hit things, this app will satisfy their needs.
Overall, if you are looking for a simple game to try to increase your accuracy, the NRA Practice Range app will do just fine. Get it while you can: with all the controversy this app has seen, who knows what will happen next.
