What is Zattoo?
Zattoo is the new pioneer in free television. Originally launched in 2006 in Switzerland, Zattoo is the first provider to make live streaming of television free. “Zattoo enables the Internet generation to consume linear live TV, whilst remaining entirely independent of the conventional TV sets in their living rooms.” Zattoo enables free programming of 100 channels in Switzerland and over 50 free channels in Germany. Its best asset is that you can utilize the technology anywhere- on your desktop computer, laptop, smart-phone or tablet.
Every user must activate an account in order to use Zattoo on all devices available for use. Though Zattoo is not in the United States, it is currently Europe’s largest provider of live web streaming, operating in six countries and reaching nine million users. The app is currently restricted to Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Germany, Norway, United Kingdom, and France.
Zattoo Pros and Cons
As all apps have, Zattoo has its pros and cons. Some of the pros include smooth streaming, TV guide access, and live television. Zattoo’s cons include no customization options, no way to change interface language, or record programs. Sure, the kinks can be worked out eventually, but this is an integral way to allow users to access and view live television, which until now was not possible.
Amongst its best features is the ability to download the app wherever, most recently developed is the Android download. Thus, you can virtually stream live television wherever you can have enough service to buffer the video. Many bloggers are diving into the realm of streaming, which allows the live streaming app to work. Many have said that this app truly allows patrons to be mobile and not “tied to their home-WiFi networks.” Surprising there are no pending lawsuits on its service.
As referenced before, Zattoo was initially developed in 2006 for the purpose to live-stream the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland. It brought much joy to patrons of soccer who loved the accessibility and convenience of the app, however the app creators were hit with a law suit, filed by Universals and Warner Brothers, that claimed that Zattoo was advertising its films streamed on German TV channels. Following this, the app dropped BBC channels and ITV1 due to the content providers’ consistent battles with the developers. The channels wanted to create their own streaming for television and sports, and Zattoo was getting in the way.
